A dink is a gentle shot played near the net after the ball bounces, aimed into your opponent’s kitchen. It is one of pickleball’s signature shots: less about power, more about touch.
Why dink?
A low, well-placed dink makes it harder for an opponent to attack. It can help you slow a rally down and create a better opportunity for your next shot.
What is the kitchen?
The kitchen is the non-volley zone beside the net. You can enter it to play a bounced ball, but you cannot volley while touching it or its boundary line. Your momentum after a volley must not carry you into the zone either.
Try a simple warm-up
With a partner, start near the kitchen line and practise a short, controlled exchange. Keep your swing compact and aim for a comfortable, repeatable shot. Count a few consecutive returns before gradually changing direction.
